I'm in the market for a 9.9 outboard with a 25" shaft. I've found a few deals importing a motor directly from Japan. They have the factory warranty, and are models built for the US market. What trouble am I getting myself into??
Thanks, Roamer

SJ21 Mark I Hull #162 for Sale
I have deleted the text of this listing due to lack of interest among the forum users. I'm going to try Craigslist... lots of small lakes and reservoirs in easy driving distance of my location, and lots of small sailboats, but no San Juan 21 fleets.

Sailing Around at Anchor
I decided that I should practice anchoring in case a thunderstorm came up before I could get back to the marina. The first time I tried it in 10-15 mph winds, the boat sailed back and forth in an arc at the end of the rode. Probably at least 45 degrees to port and 45 degrees to starboard of the true...

Re: Nut cups and covers
In my experience, they are available at any hardware store... I use them under nuts with a metal washer, just use a larger size. This is not something that needs to be "marine" quality.

Re: Terrible smell issue and solution
Years ago, I had a brand new fiberglass boat that had a strong styrene odor... but after it sat out in the sun and rain for a summer, the smell disappeared. Are you talking about a new (not San Juan) boat?

Re: Electrical System write up
I have read in this forum that the designer said the boat will NOT float when swamped. No reason to avoid opening up the hull liner to provide extra storage. If you take that much water into the cabin, it's headed for Davy Jones' Locker... edit: oops... didn't read page 2... this has already been me...

Chain Plates
I've been reading on some of the other sailing forums about the desirability of replacing chainplates. Some claim that the stainless steel is subject to corrosion and cracking that is difficult to see with the naked eye, and that after 8-10 years, it's wise to replace them. I know that mine are embe...

Jiffy Reefing
My mainsail has a single row of reefing grommets, with a bigger one at the tack. I'd like to get the system rigged before going out this year, but have no idea about how to handle the reef grommet at the tack point. Is there a hook to be attached on the gooseneck? Or do I just pull the reef tack dow...

Re: sail slides
I think 1/2" sail slugs will work, and you'll want a Davis 2350 sail track stop, also. Hopefully another forumite will chime in to confirm the size...

Re: Jib Causing Over-steer - HELP!
Portable LED bow and stern lighting is something I've seriously considered. But what about the desire for log, depth sounder, etc. It quickly becomes more convenient to install a conventional electrical system. I would probably use lithium iron phosphate batteries to keep weight at a minimum, and in...
