Swapping shroud placements
I just replaced the stock closed-body turnbuckles with some nice Hayn open-body TBs. We're planning to keep the existing wire for another year, to spread out the cost. The new TBs are a little longer than the old -- handy for the lower shrouds, which were borderline too short, but not for the uppers...

Re: Electrical System write up
Definitely fuse any wire big enuf to start a fire if shorted. Things arc & short so easily on a boat. I'd say any wire bigger than ~18g. should have a fuse. They are cheap, & if placed in line don't require much space. (Another reason I like the automotive fuses is the ease of pulling them out to is...

Re: Electrical System write up
Nice! You are really making this boat over. (Thks, BTW, for your standing rigging info -- I have a new forestay coming from Rigging Only.) We carry a very large battery (Group 27 -- 115AH), because we use a trolling motor for aux power. It lives in a molded box, level with the bulkhead (Mk1) and alo...

Re: Spreaders
Aha! Thanks. That's where the info was lurking. Is there any way to get these tuning guides pinned onto this forum?Krysia Ry wrote:http://members.shaw.ca/sjfleet28/
Check out this info from North sails on Calgary Fleet's site.

Re: Spreaders
BTW, I get a spreader angle of ~83 degrees to the mast, bent upward, when the upper shroud angle is properly bisected. That correct? I really should have sorted this out three years ago.

Spreaders
I know this is discussed somewhere, but I can't find it on either forum. What is the ideal length of the spreaders on a Mk1? And how far aft should they be swept? IIRC, it's 25.5" (spreader base to shroud slot) & as much as 6" behind the aft edge of the mast (tip-to-tip), though that seems like a lo...

Ah. So the problem was not too little air, this time. Aptly named Kanga: http://www.photoboatgallery.net/p298508665/e13f0236f White Knuckles decides the SJ21 is not really a displacement boat: http://www.photoboatgallery.net/p906396379/e22c73bd7 DDB looks into the abyss: http://www.photoboat...

Re: Sailing under the London Bridge, anyone?
Jealous! It's below freezing here in Wyoming. And the water is solid phase til April. Sounds like you've gotten good winds; it's really hit or miss in AZ, depending on the center of the winter Low Pressure system that parks there. I might just go & sit in our boat, up on blocks, & pretend we're down...

Re: Aluminum Bulkheads
One advantage to excavating Clark's epoxied-over nuts wherever possible: you can add proper backing plates. I mean, the stern cleats, bow cleat, and pulpit stanchions on our Mk1 were backed up with 1/2" diameter washers, no larger than the nut itself! Even in the solid FG areas, where there is no ba...
