Re: Back from Catalina Island
We've returned from Los Angeles alive -- even missed Carmeggedon on the 405 by a day. We spent eight days on the water & eleven sleeping in the SJ21 (Mk1). Here's a brief synopsis of the trip: Day 1: Marina del Rey to Catalina Harbor http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6129/5951931966_f056486854.jp...

Re: Off to Californi-yay
Nah. But we'll take some pics & videos (incl. underwater ones, we hope) and post them with a GPS track when we return. If we return. Right now I'm tempted to point the thing toward Cabo and never come back. Too much work waiting for me at home. Our shakedown sail was an unholy terror -- this t...

Back from Catalina Island
We're packing up the SJ21 for another trip to Catalina Island. Nine days plus travel time -- should test the limits of sleeping aboard a Mk1.;) We hope to sail from Marina Del Rey straight to Catalina Harbor, some 42 nm -- and sail we must, since we don't have a real outboard. The nylon drifter sail...

Re: from Denver
HI! Another Mountain states SJ21 sailor. A friend is putting together a small trailer-sailboat rally/picnic up here in Laramie, if you would be interested. Late June, IIRC. I'll get some details this evening. The plan it to sail around Lake Hattie -- which is small, but bigger than Aurora Reservoir ...

Re: Diarmuid, hull #???
Our HIN is CLK007191073. Does that make it hull #7, or 719? They were still kinda rationalizing HINs in '73.;) I laid out our jib using the SailCut CAD program & sewed it up on an old Italian machine. Pretty happy with the result, and more so with the mainsail we made the same way. Both are made fro...

Genoa for sale
Around 150% LP. Heavy construction, heavy fabric, good sail for overdriving the boat in beercan races. Fairly crispy; has a few grass stains. Set up for roller furling with a #6 luff tape. Could be converted to hanks. Foam luff insert to maintain shape when furled; sacrificial UV on leech & foot. Th...

Re: Keel Saver
Actually, Technora, Vectran, Dyneema, and the like have stretch characteristics pretty close to those of wire rope. Half a percent elongation at 25% breaking strength, versus 10% for polyester and up to 30% for nylon. You should not use them in applications where hard dynamic loads may be expected, ...

Re: Cayo Costa Cruising
Thanks for the report, Tom. Our boat came with one of those slip ring fluke anchors -- 9# and made by Danforth, IIRC -- and the thing would never set worth a darn. Most of the time, the flukes fouled on the giant galvanized slip ring. They have an evil reputation. So we sawed off the ring, put a sha...

Re: core
Another method for clearing out the core material prior to epoxy injection, and one I found MUCH easier than the bent nail/allen wrench technique, is to drill up from below with a bit at least 2x the fastener diameter. You can put a stop collar on it if you like, but I found it very easy to tell whe...

Re: Keel Saver
What does it take to replace the sheave on top of the keel with one big enough for the rope? Didn't at all. 1/4" hi-tech line runs perfectly in the stock sheaves, as long as they don't have burrs on the rim. Most Dyneema/Technora/Spectra/Vectran lines are okay with wire sheaves; indeed, some manufa...
