Raised boom during moorage

Post by scurvybrat » Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:09 pm

How do those with moorage keep their boom when not sailing? Do you keep it raised with the cunningham or laying on the deck?

thanks

Check out Fleet 1's tips and Stephen's single handing set-up.

Thanks, Krysia. I know you're referring to http://www.sj21fleet1.org/tips-and-tric ... ded-set-up. I'll probably go that route when I'm forced to lower the mast. I moor and my boom is presently laying on the deck (yuck!)

Looking at the Mark II owner's manual there's a section called "Rigging the Boom" on page three, "Rigging and Launching". Step 2 says: "Clip the boom holder from the backstay to the end of the boom." My backstay has no pigtail or other rigging to enable that. I suppose I could get a pigtail clamped onto it like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/BOOM-HANGER-SWE ... 3085495%26. I event thought of tying some quarter inch line into a Prusik or variant to the backstay, but I don't know if line would grab without slipping.

I appreciate any opinions on this.

I used the pigtail when i started, but switched to a topping lift. it is really easy to install a topping lift, just tie a line to the masthead and a block at the end of the boom. could probably get away with just a shackle.

for what it's worth, i take my boom off every time and stow it below. i don't use a mooring, but i do leave the mast up on a trailer in a marina. I stuff, then later fold the sails at home.

Scurvy, I just use a pig tail, no topping lift... It's the stock setup Mizu came with, probably original to the Clarks:) but it seems to work fine so I haven't really felt the need to go to a topping lift.

Mine just used a little rope clamp similar to this to attach the pig tail. Cheap and simple.

I have the mast head topping lift. I like it because after raising the main sail, I don't t have to worry about unhooking the boom off the backstay before falling off. Since i mostly single hand, its one less thing to worry about.

Do you have a picture of your mast head handy? I have a mast head fly up there but I haven't lowered the mast yet.

thanks
