The “Preliminary NOR” follows this message.
Eastern SJ 21 Juaners,
The start of the North Americans is now only 129 days away!
It is time to be working on your Juan, trailer and crew in preparation of the event.
For many of us, part of the regatta will be like a convention or rally, for example, of Classic Mustang Car collectors where cars are shown off, ideas traded, photos taken and, of course, the usual tales that will be told. Unlike the car shows, however, we actually get into our boats and enjoy the friendly competition between our “classics” on the water.
Plans are still to have the NOR with registration ready on the web sites around the middle of March. As for now, all skippers who register by the first of June will get a free T-shirt. This will give us time to have the shirts printed and ready for you at registration. The registration form will have an addendum where additional shirts for crew, pit crew, etc. can be ordered. As written last month the design has been finalized.
We have been getting inquiries already about motels and other forms of housing. Lake Murray is essentially in a metropolitan area which means that the housing round the lake is lived in year around. As a result there are virtually no cottages to rent and very few bed and breakfast operations close to the lake. The good news is we have a wide selection of motels within 10 minutes of the CSC.
We have arranged a regatta special with the Hilton Garden Inn which is conveniently located 1.5 miles from the club: http://hiltongardeninn3.hilton.com/en/h ... index.html
The regatta rate is $89 plus $10.79 in taxes. The rate is available Wed. through Sat. night (2 Queens or King). Reservations must be made by 1 June. The best way to reserve a room is to call the hotel at 803 407 6640 and ask for the “San Juan Regatta” rate.
For others seeking other accommodations, please go to: http://www.lakemurraycountry.com/places ... drews-irmo
You will find over 20 motels listed that are within minutes of the sail club.
Also, CSC has a camping area with limited RV hookups (RV reservation required) with a swim beach and showers.
The class By-Laws were updated last year and the requirements for charter were changed. It states in part, “At a minimum such contracts (charter) shall state the charterer is liable for any damage to the chartered boat while in their possession and the charterer shall show proof of insurance or post a cash deposit of at least $500.” We have some competitive boats available for charter and if you are interested please contact RLDommel@AOL.com who will line you up with an appropriate owner and you and the owner will sign a “Boat Charter Agreement.” As of now, the boats that are available are only configured for “Working Sails.”
The San Juan 21 Mid Winters is scheduled for 16 and 17 March at Lake Norman Yacht Club. This is good opportunity to check out all the improvements made to your Juan over the winter and sharpen up you sailing skills and, of course, enjoy the fellowship.
Reminder that 2013 class dues must be paid before you can be scored at a National Event. Go to: http://sj21class.org/join.html

The San Juan 21 Class Association Executive Committee has accepted the Columbia Sailing Club (CSC) and Lake Murray San Juan 21 Fleet #31 bid to host the 2013 San Juan 21 North American and East National Championships to be held 20-23 June 2013 on Lake Murray, South Carolina.
On Thursday (20 June 2013) registration and measurements will begin with a dinner at the club followed by seminars. On Friday, racing will begin at noon. Then, all day Saturday with an awards dinner Sat. eve. Friday eve will feature a dinner with entertainment out of this world. Sunday will be a makeup day, if no race is completed.
We are planning to weigh boats along with the usual boat and sail measurements to ensure one design racing in both All Sails and Working Sails Divisions. We will attempt to have some good boats available for charter. We already have one West Coast skipper at the top of list for those who want to charter. To be scored in the regatta, all skippers must meet the eligibility requirements of San Juan 21 Class Association By-Laws 2.4 Article IV.
The CSC puts on a number of major regattas throughout the year and is looking forward to having the regatta. The CSC club house is fully air conditioned. There is plenty of boat trailer parking and dock space. A camping (RV’s need to reserve space in advance) area with power and showers is located next to swim beach. Many motels are close by. If desired, competitors can arrive several days early and enjoy the CSC facilities and tour the Columbia area which has one of the best zoos in the country (Riverbanks Zoo: www.riverbanks.org).
