Send your thanks out to Kris Barker, Fleet 1, who oversees the forum and association website. I think Tom sold his boat and moved on but he was instrumental our venturing into the world wide web.

Good thing Kris had a 4-day weekend to put on his armor and battle the bots! Here's his note from last night...

"I really hope I've got things fixed/secure this time ... what a hassle. Ended up deleting 3,000 bogus users and nearly 10,000 posts. The key (I hope) was changing the challenge questions for creating accounts - apparently once those get "discovered", the bots pass them around and the attack begins.
Jeez ..."

I was talking to Kris yesterday about it as we had the same thing happen on the Fleet 1 Forums... around the same time as the class did too.

Thankfully neither Fausto or I ever turned off "admin authorization" required for accounts to be able to post threads/replies otherwise we would have been in a similar state. I started getting "new account" emails every 30 seconds, and said "ruh roh". I was not at home, so had to turn off new account registration completely before I could fix the issue.

It's true about the question/answers, once the person behind the script figures them out, the script can start registering accounts like crazy.
