Import Outboard?

Post by Roamer » Sat May 18, 2019 5:15 pm

I'm in the market for a 9.9 outboard with a 25" shaft. I've found a few deals importing a motor directly from Japan. They have the factory warranty, and are models built for the US market. What trouble am I getting myself into??

Thanks, Roamer

I’m not sure about the import, but that is a lot of engine for an SJ21. My 4hp Yamaha has a long shaft and can push hull speed at 1/4 throttle. I have beat into 20mph wind with no problem. Racers use 2hp for weight concerns. If you are importing to save money, maybe look at a smaller slightly used engine. I got mine off of craigslist for around 5 hundred and it has been great (once I figured it out).

Hello, I've got a Honda BF5 5 hp four stroke and I love it! I think brand new they go for about $1600-$2000 (https://www.powerequipmentdirect.com/Ho ... zUEALw_wcB) so check around. I was able to find a 20" long shaft for $600. I did not need longer than a 20" shaft. I can work on engines so after a valve adjustment, tune up and a new carb float pin she runs great! I can get about 5-6 knots with her not against the wind. Plenty enough to get around the lake. I sail protected waters so keep that in mind. Good luck!
