What a difference a year makes!! New Years Day 2018 below freezing, high wind, rain, ice and a quarter mile race. New Years Day 2019 70 degrees, sunshine, 5 to 15 knots of air and 3 excellent races. Mad Mama (Fred’s Boats name) would have enjoyed the 47th running of this event. Twelve boats hit the starting line, rounding marks, other boats and the shallow spots on Upper Broad Creek during the course of the day. First place was a walk away by Duces Wild skippered by Mark Whienhimer with crew Gorden LeGrand chalking up 4 points. The racing was tight in places 2 through 6 with only a 2 point spread results being decided by tiebreaker scoring. Hot Sauce (Tim Poole) was honored with a resurrected transom award for viewing the most boats from behind during the races.
Many thanks to the race committee headed up by PRO Bill Jarvis along with mark and safety boats staffed by a full complement of crew. Shoreside the Blackbeard Ladies prepared a ham with all the fixing lunch with side brought in by the racers. Ken Gurganus provided framed trophies including a photo taken by Fred Latham. Fred’s family has gifted a number of silver bowls won by Fred over the years that will be presented to the first place skipper on an annual basis. The winner also has a plaque placed on the “Mad Mama” perpetual trophy recognizing their accomplishment.
Many thanks to all for making this event a success. Submitted by Doug Longhini
