San Juan 21 Class Association

My boat came with a line attached to the boom that I have been cleating to the mast to hold the boom from riding up the mast when the main sail is up. However, to adjust tension in the sail, this arrangement makes that task difficult to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways this can be rigged? Does anyone use a Cunningham to adjust the sail tension and not the boom tie down?

Yours is the same arrangement I have on my boat.
I don't typically adjust the downhaul that often on my boat, but maybe adding a block for 3:1 (or more) similar to this: http://www.murrays.com/01-1028.html or this: http://www.murrays.com/07-2089-1.html might help?

i agree with Jim W. you want a downhaul. i only have one block, so little leverage, but i don't race.

I have a cleat mounted to the mast under the boom where a short length of 3/16th line attached to the goose neck is secured. No block or other mechanical advantage. I just set it and pull the halyard as tight as I can.

There is also a cunningham that I rig just because its there but I'm not sophisticated enough to use it correctly.
