Spinnaker Pole Mast Pad Eye Distance

My SJ21 "mast pad eye" for the spinnaker pole is about 6' 10" from the mast base. Is this the recommended distance? I purchased my boat around 2003 and I have always sailed her with a working jib and no spinnaker. I would like to use a spinnaker this year and I want to make sure the original "mast pad eye" is in the right place (distance from the mast base).
