Replacing Halyards

Hello from the Midwest,

I pulled my boat off the mooring yesterday. For next season, I’m considering replacing the current wire/ 3/8” rope halyards. The current halyards I suspect are original and the junction between the wire and rope is just a knot tied to a loop in the wire. Because of the configuration of the joint and size, the halyard sometimes catches on the mast spreader bars, especially in strong winds.

Should I replace them with new spliced wire/ rope halyards or should I make the switch to all rope lines? Do the existing pulleys at the top of the mast accept rope? Right now, only wire passes thru the pulleys. It’s hard to tell by looking at them.

Or, is there a better way to make the connection between the rope and wire that wouldn’t hang up on the spreader bar as much?

I switched to 1/4 synthetic line about 10 years ago and am still using those lines with original blocks/sheaves. I recommend using dynemma/vectran cored line as it doesn’t stretch. Couple of years ago I pulled them and re-tied them from the opposite end to extend their life since they wear when they tough the cleat/sheaves. Buy a halyard shackle and use a halyard knot.
