Fleet 29 2017 Travel Series

Post by bohawn » Mon Feb 20, 2017 2:14 pm

This week Fleet 29 attended the George Washington Birthday Regatta at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club.

Three San Juan 21 competitors came to sail in this year’s event as this is the first event to kick off Fleet 29’s Travel Series. Only having three competitors we did not meet the required Six to create a Fleet but the Organizing Committee scored us separate from the rest of the Miscellaneous Fleet as they knew that we were kicking off our season.

Day One, the winds were out of the South Southwest at around 10 – 12 MPH as the race committee set up a Windward Leeward course with an upwind finish. Race one was a great battle between all three competitors until Justice with Randy Pawlowski and Brandon was struck by another boat on the course which bent their spreader. Mike Loughlin and Bill Holstein battled it out to the finish where the Black Jack team caught and passed Irish Juan in closing seconds of the race.
The front that was lingering in the gulf for the morning finally made it to Lake Eustis and the RC called everyone in. Another attempt by the RC was ended as the wind decided to die off.

Day Two, we found the front gone and winds around 8-10 MPH from the North Northwest. The Race Committee was on a mission to achieve as many races as possible during the limited time period. Race two, all three boats got off the line good with Irish Juan showing great strength upwind against Justice and Black Jack. At the first was Irish Juan, only to hit the mark and have to do a 360 when safe. This opened the door for Justice to win the race.

Race two, all boats got a clean start with Irish Juan once again showing promise in the upwind. Both Justice and Irish Juan dueled on the right side of the course as both took turns crossing each other until they separated. Both boats headed to the mark as Justice took the lead. Experience on the downwind paid off for Justice as Irish Juan had issues at the bottom of the course and could not catch up to the leader.

Congrats to Randy, Brandon and Luis for the great sailing over the weekend. You ask where BlackJack was on day two. Bill and Patti said that every time they tacked they got knocked and then had issues with the spinnaker. Not an issue for these two as we all know they will be in the hunt at the next race.

Next up for Fleet 29 Travel Series is the St. Augustine Race Week on March 22nd and 23rd, then the Mt. Dora Regatta hosted by the Mt. Dora Yacht Club on April 1st and 2nd. We will need five boats to have our own class at St. Augustine and four boats for the Mt. Dora Regatta for us to have trophies for our competitors.

Below is the registration for both events.
