swing keel replacement

Post by 4426 » Fri Jul 22, 2022 4:25 pm

I am new to SJ21 (Mark 2) ownership. I have had wooden sailboats in the past. The amount of rotten core in the cabin roof and cockpit sole and the rotten replacement center board has made me realize there were better options. Can't give up now, I am getting ready to roll it over to fix the cabin roof.
So a couple of questions:
Where is the hull number?
Does anybody know where I can find an original replacement swing keel? Any condition
I have the Class dimensions for the keel, are there construction details available?
The rotten replacement keel was 2" thick, no fairing with a 200 lb lead boot, are there other ideas?
The hole in the trunk for the keel bolt looks chewed up, are there construction details for a rebuild?
Thanks, Rob

I believe the registration number is punched on the transom just below the metal trim.

Good luck. You have some major work ahead. So I gave my friend a MKII when I was restoring my MKIII. I pulled a lot of parts off of it but it still has the original swing keel under it. The only thing about it is it is now a big flag pole in his yard. He’s retired from the Coast Guard. We’re in Tennessee if you want me to ask. I don’t know how we would do it and I don’t know if he would price it. You would probably have to come and help. I just thought I would offer.

If you don't find a proper keel, you could contact Stephen at sjsailboats.com and see if he kept those molds. I am not entirely sure how much, or what he kept from Gene.
