First Race of Fleet 29 Travel Series for 2016

Post by bohawn » Mon Feb 15, 2016 7:29 pm

This weekend Fleet 29 started their 2016 travel series at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club.
The 46 Annual George Washington Birthday Regatta is the first event on the Fleet’s 2016 travel series. Besides the people and volunteers that are always friendly, Lake Eustis put on a great event as the weather and winds could not have been better for a this regatta. The event, mainly pointed towards Flying Scots and juniors made room for us to sail as there were over 80 boats and 41 Flying Scots.
It was a sight to watch 41 boats on the line trying to jockey for position on each other on the over 700 foot line. This line gave a lot of room for the San Juan’s to focus on sailing and not on pushing the line. Not the showing we were hoping for as only four SJ21 registered for the opening event of the travel series.
Race one was taken by Randy Pawlowski, as he was to show why he is the winner of the 2015 series. But it was not as easy as he thought as Will Blevins gave Pawlowski a run for his money chasing him to the finish. Followed by Mike Loughlin grabbing third in race one and Bill Holstein following behind Loughlin.
Race two, Blevins took a chance on the right side of the course which paid off while the rest of the fleet was on the left. Blevins, rode a wind line that took him to the top mark in the third leg to grab the win followed by Pawlowski, Holstein then Loughlin.
With the exception of Holstein not racing in races four and five, the top two competitors were Pawlowski and Blevins as they battled up and down the course on Lake Eustis with Pawlowski taking the bullet in the last three races.
The final scores were as followed, Pawlowski 1st, Blevins 2nd, Loughlin 3rd and Holstein 4th. There are six more races to compete in with the next stop for the travel series at the Mt Dora Regatta April 2nd and 3rd. The Fleet needs four boats to be registered for our own fleet. So come out and support Fleet 29.
