ok I just bought my 1st sj21 and I am getting ready to start the overhaul when i noticed some dummy drilled a 3/4 inche hole in the transom to drain the water out . Now I new this was going to be a project but does anybody have any ideas that might help me with this. I hope to get this boat done and in the water so I can join the fleet in my area. I guess I should have expected things like this when I paid $100.00 but from what i have read I think it will be well worth it.

Absolutely dumb... fairly easy to fix, that too:)

I'd suggest reading everything you can from Don Casey, he's got great articles, and written many books. Also look around the forums here, and elsewhere, there are MANY articles in fixing holes like this assuming you have some basic tools knowledge.

The hole is 4" up from keel just off to starboard.

A picture would be worth more than a thousand words here. The location as you describe it puts the hole 2-3 inches above the bottom gugeon. That sounds more like a fool had a fuel line leading from the lazarette, I'm assuming a Mark II model, to the outboard. Can't think of any other earthly reason for a hole in the tansom there. It wouldn't even ship much water when sailing since that area seldom get's wet except maybe downwind with a following wave.

I talked to the dummy he drilled the hole to empty the water out that was sitting in the boat from the rain Because he did not feel like reaching in and hooking up the battery to turn on the bilge pump. A drill was closer go figure

I'm with Cal... pic needed as i'm now a bit confused... You say there's a hole in the transom which I don't think would drain the cockpit or the bilge on either a MKI or II, but then you say it's 2-3" up from the keel to starboard, which seems more like you're talking about the bottom of the hull? Bottom of the hull would make more sense considering he was trying to drain the boat.

Either way, the fix is basically the same... chamfer the edges out to a 12:1 ratio IIRC, then start building up layers. I'd use epoxy, but you can't adhere gel-coat to normal epoxy, so would require a special epoxy, or require you to use standard fiberglass resin.
