2011 Seattle NOODs

Post by Capt. Woogy » Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:23 am

Time to get your blue blazer cleaned and pressed so you'll be ready for some big time yacht racing in Seattle. Mark your calendar for May 20 -22. This will be the 4th year the SJ21 will take part in this great event. Each year we've grown in numbers and this year we need to hit 20! Three days full of racing, 13 starts last year, great post race parties and of coarse... those fruity rum drinks. Fleet 1 has offered up housing if anyone needs it and there might even be a boat or 2 available for charter.

Here is the link for regatta information and registration.
www.sailingworld.com
Then click: NOOD Regattas
Then click: Seattle under the list of Locations and Dates, Under the Seattle Section you will see ONLINE REGISTRATION along with some other informative links.
Registration Link is: https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt ... ta_id=3773

If you have any questions just let me know.

Well, we didn't make our goal of 20 boats but the 10 skippers that did make the effort were treated to 12 races over the 3 days. Total event participation was down this year as well. With a not so promising forecast, rain and winds 2-4, we lucked out once again... no rain! Thursday night Fleet 1 hosted a BBQ down on the guest dock where the eager SJ21 skippers were gathering after launching. Nothing better than dogs-n-beer to get the competitive juices flowing. 3 boats made the trip up from Oregon; Jon Richards, Hank Erbele and new SJ21 skipper Elliott Crowder from Newport. Mary McCollum with Wes Vaughn and Marc, Jon and Spencer Vander Schalie made the trip over the mountains from eastern Washington. Unfortunately for the rest of us the mountain passes never close this time of year. ;)

Friday ended up being the best of the 3 days with sun, 70 degrees and winds that built in the afternoon allowing us to get 5 races in. Kermit and Yellow Jacket made it known early that they meant business. Next year I think I'll try sleeping on the boat if I can get those kind of results. Saturday we were greeted by fog, clouds, threatening skies and... flat water. After killing some time on the docks the postponement flag came down and everyone headed out. Light winds made the strong currents an even bigger factor with some skippers (wooglin) hitting the marks more than once. As the winds died the race committee sent us in with just 3 races in the books. The rains held off long enough for everyone to drag themselves away from the famed Rum Tent and then proceeded to dump all night. On second thought maybe I won't sleep on the boat. On sunday morning the experts were calling for winds 1-2 out of the south and drizzle, not a good sign. As the RC took off we were surprised to see 8-10 out of the north which built a little and held all day. With everyone having 2 days of racing under their belts the competition was getting tighter in the 4 races we got off on Sunday, but at the end of the day it was those 2 boats from Fleet 52 that put a whoopin on the rest of us. Mary driving Wes' "Yellow Jacket" finished with 2 seconds and 10 firsts in Working-Sails. Marc and "Kermit" reeled off an even more impressive result in the Spinnaker group... 12 straight bullets! Well done guys.

So who gets the trip to the BVIs. A Melges 24. In order to get someone from our group in the running for top boat at this event we need to get our numbers over 20, so mark your calendars for next year and come to what continues to be a great event, with great racing and oh yes... Fruity Rum drinks!

Thanks for the report Chris. Sounds like you guys had fun. Hopefully next year the SJ fleet will get the BVI trip. I hope Marc got thrown into the Sound after that result.

I thought it was the skipper from the "most competitive" fleet though, correct?

I'd love to send an SJ21 guy to the BVI's, but as I read it, the numbers of boats isn't the thing that'd push "our guy" into the BVI's, and at least one of the years the guy who went was from a smaller fleet than what we had anyways. If I read it correctly having a skipper in a fleet get nothing but bullet's could demonstrate there was no competition at all and what we really need to do is focus on a way to destroy, er beat kermit I mean:)

Unless i'm misunderstanding something...

Edit: The way they have it worded, it sure seems like we need to beat Kermit more to send someone to go to the BVI's...

At the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Seattle NOOD, skipper Herb Cole and the crew of Midsummer Hai-Yah! won a hotly contested Melges 24 division in which six of 13 boats won at least one race. Midsummer's victory earned the team the regatta's overall crown, which includes an invitation to compete in the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Championship this November in the British Virgin Islands.

I did just notice that you guys are one of the top 3 front pages images at Sailing World. No idea how long that will last, but it's a great pic.
