This years Western Nationals are in the books and were once again a big success. The folks from Fleet 43 can write the book on how to host a top notch event. The weather turned in time for 3 days of sun and great winds. Ten Mile Lake was up to her usual tricks with big time shifts, wind pressure all over the place and the occasional 30+ smack-down just to keep you on your toes, but it all made for some great racing. Sean Randle was top dog in the 18 boat W/S fleet which was loaded with local competition. The A/S fleet was comprised of 5 boats, all from out of town. (Who else would be crazy enough to fly a kite on this lake) I'm sure some of Wooglin's spinnaker sets would have made for great "U-Tube" viewing. Once again the "Mean, Green and Ugly" machine walked away with 1st after tallying 5 bullets. If you look closely at the perpetual trophy you will see the name Ruth Barcus on there an amazing 21 times! She is truly a SJ21 treasure. Be sure and mark your calendars for July next summer and plan a trip to the North Americans at Huntington Lake CA. It's a bit of a drive but you won't regret it.
Thanks again Fleet 43... well done!
